Zanele runs a thriving sewing business on the side, sewing outfits for church choirs, graduation gowns for preschoolers, chair covers. Whenever she gets a nice big order, she loves to buy something special with her earnings - like her beautiful black and red lounge suite, artistically decorated with the odd Mielie cast-off. Doesn't it just say - Welcome, have a seat?

Earlier this month husband Deon and I sneaked away for a week long road trip through the Klein Karoo. Every morning we would wake up with only the vaguest agenda and not the foggiest where we would sleep that night. We must have traversed at least ten magnificent mountain passes, shuddered our way over scores of dirt roads and passed through many a quaint one-blink-town.
It reminded me of when I was a child and we would all pile into the car on weekends and just... go for a drive!
... and oh boy, we live in a beautiful country!

These cute ellie pencil cases just landed safely in Detroit, Michigan. The elephant with its UPturned trunk is the emblem of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a non-profit organization of 200,000 predominately Black college educated women that provides assistance and support to local communities throughout the world.
Thanks so much to Mielie's enthusiastic ambassador extraordinaire, Yvette Jenkins, for your tireless support and work! Yvette is pictured here with Zanele, when she visited us in February.

The other day when I popped in at Khayelitsha, Zanele's son, Lusa, and his friends were hard at work on their isilwayiwayi - or draadkarre, as we knew them when I was young. After much testing and debate, it was decided that the old inline skate wheels needed to be replaced with old snuff box wheels, eagerly collected from the old men of the neighbourhood.

When I popped in at Khayelitsha the other day Zanele was wearing a very pretty necklace made of plaited grass and beads. When I asked her about it, she said that she wears it whenever she has a dream about her family or she just misses home and it always makes her feel better... What a lovely idea!

The sunsets have recently been so magnificent, although I fear we won't see another for a little while. Today it's all Cape of Storms and no sun.

Autumn always brings the most spectacular clouds and skies. Today we had a fantastic thunderstorm that pushed Table Mountain's table cloth right over the back of the Twelve Apostles. It looked like a witch's cauldron that was boiling over. Then the heavens opened and the parched Earth had its first proper autumn drenching.
