Altogether now: Eeeekkkkk!

These roaches, expertly woven by the Mielie mammas, have been stitched onto panels and delivered to Infecting the City, a "provocative, high quality, innovative public art festival", due to open on the 21st. The panels be joined to form one of the stages.

When the festival is over, they will be returned to us in the spirit of recycling. We will stitch them together to make 3 ottomans. One is already spoken for, but if you believe that a roach ottoman is just that je ne sais quoi that's missing from your home, give us a call!

Sit and smell the coffee

After a great break filled with family, friends and food, we're back - well rested and chomping at the bit for a year filled with great ideas and great products... like these ottomans that Mawethu is helping to refine. They are made from coffee sacks which have been hand-stitched together. Can't wait to see the final product!

Unsung heroes

The 15 cubes for the Forum Homini hotel were completed in record time. Beautifully woven by those talented Mielie weavers, and ALL sewn up over one weekend by Mawethu and Luyolo. Special mention must also go to Mzo and Malibongwe who co-ordinated this huge undertaking. Thanks to all of you!

We [heart] the honeymoon suite!

While we were given a bit more time to play with the ottomans destined for the other rooms at the Forum Homini hotel (see entry below), they needed the heart cube for the honeymoon suite urgently. We obliged, and they obliged us with a beautiful photo of our masterpiece in situ. Thanks, Tanya!

Charly's fabric

We've just received our Charly's print in four new colourways, as well as the original beige on brown. This design was inspired by the beautiful pressed ceiling of Charly's backery - next time you're waiting for you cupcakes, look up - you'll find that your time in the queue will fly!

100% local, 100% cotton drill, and ideal for cushions, curtains and homeware. We're selling it at R120 per meter in the shop.

On Saturday Mielie hosted some German Journalists who were on a tour of South Africa as guests of SA Tourism. It was great to tell them the Mielie story and show them how we make our products - Zanele, Sheila and Mzo were on hand to demonstrate and answer questions. Unfortunately I was too busy talking to take photos, but afterwards Erick of SA Tourism invited us all out for lunch at Kwalapa organic restaurant, where I snapped these pics of the team just about to tuck in. Also pictured is Mawethu, who just happened to be in the right place at the right time!
