speckle

This beautiful young cow came sauntering past the food garden in Khayelitsha today. Her markings are typical of the Nguni cattle, wealth of the Xhosa people and a universal inspiration to designers in many different disciplines.

She reminds me of the AJ bag on the right, specially requested and designed by James as a surprise for his girlfriend. Apparently she loved it. Who wouldn't? I think we'll call it the Nguni design.

Perfect break

We spent the week in a charming holiday house with a forest for a backyard at Nature's Valley (7 hrs from Cape Town). I don't know what was more beautiful - the exquisite nature or the lovely old curtains and quilts in all the rooms.

My daily routine was something like:
* Knead dough & bake bread
Eat a huge breakfast
cursory tidy up
Read
embroider or crochet a bit
Walk on the beach or in the forest
Help prepare a huge communal dinner
Eat said dinner with some wine
Read some more
Prepare tomorrow morning's dough starter
Repeat from *

I learned to bake sourdough bread, a skill I've always coveted - 7 days, 7 loaves.

Presenting a REAL carpet bag!

We made a beautiful round carpet called Orbit ages ago, and look! Orbit also makes a great bag - in fact it makes two bags, because the two sides are completely different. It was Outi who gave us the idea, and it left for Finland this morning. Outi has a stand at Helsinki's Habitare trade show which ends on Sunday, so if you're in the area, pop in and say HI to her. Good luck and Kiitos, Outi!

By the way, have a look at these awesome vintage Japanese postcards on Colour Lovers.

Yearly miracle

The West Coast spring flowers are spectacular this year and you need only drive 100km to the Postberg nature reserve near Langebaan to get your fill. It's incredible to think that no-one plans this unruly symphony of colour - it just happens. The problem with trying to capture the splendor on "film" is that you end up with cheesy postcard snaps. Oh well.

While you're at Postberg, don't forget to take a walk down to the bird lookout to enjoy the graceful flamingos. You can also spend hours watching the mountain zebra, antelope and many many ostriches.

At Mielie we love celebrating local brands and imagery in our special medium. But maybe we should spread our wings...?

Shadow play

There's a certain ray of sunlight that only visits on sunny days in the late winter. It casts a low golden beam on my kitchen counter and makes dramatic long shadows. The organic thingy in the images is the fibrous webbing around a watsonia bulb.

Two posts in one day can only mean one thing - MARINA IS BACK! Wamkilikeli, sisi!

Visiting dignitary

All the artists and crafters at Montebello rushed out of their studios to marvel at this beautiful creature who graced us with her presence yesterday.
