Wire buggy bliss

The other day when I popped in at Khayelitsha, Zanele's son, Lusa, and his friends were hard at work on their isilwayiwayi - or draadkarre, as we knew them when I was young. After much testing and debate, it was decided that the old inline skate wheels needed to be replaced with old snuff box wheels, eagerly collected from the old men of the neighbourhood.

Autumn sunset magic

The sunsets have recently been so magnificent, although I fear we won't see another for a little while. Today it's all Cape of Storms and no sun.

Take a moment to look up

Autumn always brings the most spectacular clouds and skies. Today we had a fantastic thunderstorm that pushed Table Mountain's table cloth right over the back of the Twelve Apostles. It looked like a witch's cauldron that was boiling over. Then the heavens opened and the parched Earth had its first proper autumn drenching.

Hello, Autumn

Hey, I'm back after a wonderful Easter, Labour day and Freedom day break, filled with choccies and friends from afar. In Cape Town we're all loving the beautiful autumn days - the golden sunsets and crisp, often foggy morning walks with the dogs. We've had a couple of rainy days already, but the summer was so hot and dry that the rain is very welcome and the world is already looking much softer and greener.

Time to unpack the knitting needles, methinks!

Spring?

True to form, it's raining on spring day in Cape Town. Oh well, if you live in Cape Town you know that spring takes a little while to say goodbye to winter... and in any case, we can do with the rain after the mild, dry winter. So put on your gumboots and make a splash!

Fruit & Veg City, Khayelitsha

Remember Zanele's old house? Well, you won't recognise it - when she moved to her new plot, her son, Lubabalo, moved into her old house, and transformed the front section into an ubercool fruit & veg shop. Zanele also offers sewing and darning service from the premises. Viva the entrepreneurial spirit!

Sad news

On the hunt for some beautiful wool for a new range of coats, I popped into SA Fine Worsted, tradtionally Cape Town's Mecca for beautiful wool fabrics. ... Only to find out that they are yet another local textile factory that is closing down. In fact, the factory is already closed and the factory shop is only open for a couple more days. So if you want to stock up on some never-to-be-repeated bargains, pop in to their factory shop in 7th Ave, Kensington.

Personally, I'd prefer to pay a bit more and know they will be around in the future...

Hello autumn

After a couple of real scorching hot days in late Feb and early March, we have all been loving the soft cool autumn air that recently arrived without much ado.
